Henry John Furber
Violin maker
(1809 – 1891)
Henry John Furber was the son and pupil of John Furber and worked for John Betts, specializing in copies of the 1704 'Betts' Stradivari violin. Established in Grafton Street from 1825, he was located at 50 Britannia Row, Islington from 1846 to 1864, and at 79 Dean Street in 1885. He died at 158 Euston Road at the age of 82. Tools and part-finished instruments were auctioned at Puttick & Simpsons in 1892, according to the Hill Archive. His best work was done for Betts and was comparable to some efforts of the Fendt family; however, after the shop closed in 1867, he declined rapidly due to alcoholism. He produced copies of Stradivari and Amati, using varnish in various shades and textures according to the model, ranging from dark red-brown to paler golden-amber. He also created many useful contralto violas, cellos, and double basses.
