John Rose II
Violin maker
(c. 1560 – 1611)
John Rose, son and pupil of the viol maker John Rose I, continued to work in his father's Bridewell Palace workshop after the elder John's death until 1607, when he was given notice for unpaid rent. Dating of all instruments attributed to 'John Rose' is tentative, and it is likely that the younger Rose was responsible for most surviving work. A wire-strung bandora from 1580 is the most reliable representative of his craftsmanship, noted for its elaborate and well-crafted design. The latest known example of his work is dated 1609.
