Alfred James Rope was a self-taught violin maker from 1890, while still serving as a soldier in Aldershot Barracks. He resided in Woolwich in 1927. He created over 200 instruments based on Stradivari or Guarneri models, which included violas and cellos. His work was characterized as coarse, and he used oil varnish in various shades.
