George Romney
Violin maker
(1734 – 1802)
George Romney was a celebrated portrait painter and amateur maker. He was a pupil in violin making under his father, John Romney. He made at least one intricately carved violin, which displayed superb skill but featured a personal model with slightly eccentric soundholes, and this instrument remained within the family until 1894. He expressed a desire to establish a violin making centre in his hometown of Dalton, Lancashire, encouraging local amateurs and enthusiasts to participate. This initiative, however, seems to have come to nothing.
