George Miles
Violin maker
(d. 1911)
George Miles was a self-taught British maker based in London, known for producing around 90 instruments during his lifetime. His early work on the Stainer model was eccentric and poorly accomplished, but he later developed a more satisfactory Stradivari pattern, utilizing his own red-brown varnish. After his death, several of his instruments, including a collection of 50, were finished and sold by the London dealership Dykes & Son. Miles numbered his instruments on the label, for example: "George Miles / Amator Fecit 1892 No. 3."
