George Corsby I
Violin maker
(1790 – 1872)
George Corsby was originally a shoemaker from Northampton. He operated at 8 Princes Street, London from 1835 to 1841, and then moved to 9 Princes Street from 1841 to 1869. He was a dealer in musical instruments, engaging in typical London trade work. The instruments included Amati or Stainer models with thin brown or golden yellow varnish, likely produced by outworkers. These cellos were very useful, featuring compact dimensions and good playing qualities. Bows were also found bearing the Corsby brand, made by William Tubbs.
