Joseph Puskas studied under Paulus Pilat from 1938 to 1941. He established himself in New York before relocating to Los Angeles in 1947. Initially, he used Stradivari and Guarneri models, later developing a personal model. He also created early violas based on the Gaspar da Salo model, with later instruments following his personal design. He employed spirit varnish until 1970, after which he switched to an oil formulation. Since 1954, he primarily used local materials. He completed about 150 instruments, which were branded externally as 'Joseph Puskas. '.
