Josef Müller
Bow maker
(1850 – c. 1925)
Josef Müller was a violin and bow maker, the son and pupil of Andreas Müller, a wind instrument maker and dealer. He distinguished himself as a flautist and as a maker and repairer of brass and woodwind instruments, taking over his father's shop in 1873. The business expanded to include the making and repair of stringed instruments, producing or retailing generally inexpensive commercial copies of Stradivari, Guarneri, and Stainer. He created some experimental models and made various attempts at improved varnish formulations and wood treatments, primarily water-seasoning the timber and occasionally using lime-water. His son Andreas succeeded him. He produced bows of good commercial quality.
