Bartolomeo Giuseppe Guarneri 'del Gesù', Cremona, c. 1732, the 'Gillott, Lord Dunmore'
Violin: 40395
Bearing its original label, "Joseph Guarnerius fecit Cremona anno 1734."
Back: Two-piece of medium curl descending from the joint
Ribs: of similar but less pronounced
Length of back: 35.6 cm
Notes:
Listed as both 1732 & 1734 in the Hills book. Henley lists the instrument as 1732. At the sale of the Gillot Collection by Christie's in 1872, it is listed as 1732, and George Hart compounded the error by repeating the 1732 date in an article he wrote. But since the label is original and bears the date 1734, this must be the true date. The Gillott Del Gesu, Robert Lewin, The Strad, November, 1977, London
