William Hermann Moennig II
Bow maker / Violin maker
(1905 – 1982)
William Hermann Moennig, son and pupil of William Heinrich Moennig, studied violin making with Paul Dorfel and bow making with Paul Heberlein in Markneukirchen, and later attended the Mittenwald School of Violin Making. In 1936, he became the first American to obtain his Master's certificate. He returned to the family business in Philadelphia but ceased new making in 1956, eventually relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1983, where he taught violin making and repair at the Blair School of Music. Moennig created approximately 30 violins, 30 violas, and 2 cellos, all modeled after classical Italian works. He was succeeded by his son William (III). His instruments are labeled 'William H. Moennig, Jr. / Philadelphia-Pennsylvania / U.S.A. 19..'
