Auguste Falisse
Violin maker
(1883 – 1951)
Auguste Falisse apprenticed to Delinet in Mirecourt. He worked briefly for Silvestre and Maucotel in Paris, and then with Mougenot in Brussels. In 1905, he established his own workshop in Ixelles, Brussels, assisted by his son from 1912. His instruments featured Stradivari and Guarneri models with shaded varnish. Occasionally, he used commercial varnish supplied by Angell of Bristol. Boosey & Hawkes imported his instruments to London. He was influenced by the acoustic theories of Dr. Chenantais of Paris. At a competition in Paris in 1912, his work was judged to have superior tone compared to a Stradivari. This event was celebrated on his label.
