Aegidius Klotz
Violin maker
(b. 1625)
Aegidius Klotz was the son of Sebastian Klotz. He was regarded as one of the finest among this large family of Mittenwald makers. His work was very refined, featuring a characteristic Stainer/Amati model with a medium high arch. The nicks were set slightly high on the 'f', typically accompanied by a short swan-necked pegbox and a tightly-wound volute. He used several varnishes, mostly of good quality and consistency. An earlier Aegidius (I) proposed by Henley lacks support elsewhere and is likely based on a misread or falsified label.
