François Breton
Violin maker
(fl. 1778 – 1830)
François Breton was a luthier to the Duchesse d'Angourême. He was a very prolific and much-imitated maker. His style was quite refined, generally slightly oversized, featuring a flat arch and clear yellow varnish, although there was some lack of attention to details, and the quality of materials varied significantly. Thousands of factory-made instruments were produced in his style after his death. He also made good cellos and bows. His brand appeared on the back button and was occasionally inscribed within the pegbox as F. BRETON. Printed labels included: F Breton, Musicarius / Mitecurti, anno 1805.
