William Wilkanowski

William Wilkanowski was a Polish maker active from 1895 who emigrated to the USA in 1920. He worked for Oliver Ditson in Boston and later for Gretsch in New York starting in 1938. Wilkanowski is noted for his large output, reportedly making 5,000 violins, roo violas, and 30 guitars, including Cremonese and personal models. He utilized his own amber-oil varnish, and later examples of his work featured purfling crafted into a 'W' at the back button. His primary work location was in Brooklyn, NY
