Leopold Widhalm was generally recognized as the best German maker following Stainer. His model was very distinctive and graceful, featuring a medium high arch and deeply fluted edges. The purfling was broad and beautifully inlaid. The soundholes were based on the Stainer pattern but were refined and neat without any exaggeration. Characteristic edgework included a strongly chamfered underside with a knife cut. The interior blocks and linings were made of pine, with 'c' bouts morticed. The varnish was particularly good, ranging from light golden-brown in early work to dark orange-brown in the mature period, always exhibiting a rich, soft translucency and often featuring a fine crackled texture. He used excellent materials. Small violas, as well as cellos and double basses, were noted. He was succeeded by his son Martin Leopold Widlhalm, who continued with the same label.
