Ira Johnson White
Violin maker

Ira Johnson White was the son of John White and was active from 1825. He moved to Boston in 1829. He established himself independently in 1835 and was joined by his brother Asa in 1849. From 1863, he worked on his own in Malden and Melrose. His early work featured a personal model with an archaic wedge fingerboard. He created copies of his own Stradivari starting in 1851, and introduced an Amati model in 1864. He produced fine work using good local materials and golden-orange varnish.
