Lorenzo Ventapane
Violin maker
(1780 – 1843)
One of the most important makers of the Neapolitan tradition, Lorenzo Ventapane probably studied with one of the members of the illustrious Gagliano family, perhaps Giovanni or his son Nicolò II. The Gagliano influence on Ventapane's instruments is strong and is evident in their construction, varnish, and sound quality. In particular, the elongated vertical f-holes, peg placement, and use of paper in the purfling are characteristic Neapolitan touches. Some of Ventapane's work is of very fine quality, while the overall level of craftsmanship and materials considerably.
