Pietro Sgarabotto
Violin maker
(1903 – 1990)
Pietro Sgarabotto was the son and pupil of Gaetano Sgarabotto, working as a violinist and maker in Vicenza in 1920 and in Parma in 1930. He taught at the Parma Violin Making School from 1928 to 1932 and alongside his father from 1929 to 1936, later teaching at the Cremona School from 1959 to 1973. Sgarabotto's instruments, while heavier and less elegant than his father's, exhibit characteristic refinement, often utilizing Italian maple and varnish that ranges from yellow-brown to vivid red. He received numerous accolades, including medals in Rome in 1920, Padua in 1930, Bologna in 1932, Cremona in 1949, Florence in 1951, and Ascoli Piceno in 1961. A violin, viola, and cello were exhibited by him at Cremona in 1937
