Renato Scrollavezza graduated from the Cremona School of Violin Making. He established himself in Parma and became one of the senior figures in 20th century Italian lutherie. From 1975 to 1983, he taught at the violin schools of Parma and Milan. In 1980, he withdrew from professional production to focus on private research. He was appointed curator of the 1743 'Cannone' Guarneri of Paganini in Genoa ...Read More from 1988 to 2000. His daughter Elisa (b. 1967) succeeded him. He received many awards, including prizes in Rome 1956, Ancona 1957 and 1958, Pegli 1960, Ascoli Piceno 1959, Poznan 1962 and 1967, Liege 1963 and 1966, and Cremona 1963 and 1965. He was credited with 220 violins, 60 violas, 39 cellos, three double basses, and various other historical instruments, along with one hundred guitars.
