Lucien Schmitt
Violin maker
(1892 – 1984)
Lucien Schmitt studied the violin at the Geneva conservatoire. He trained for two years as a luthier in Mirecourt with Mougenot and studied bow making with Bazin. He worked for Vidoudez in Geneva, Lorange in Lyons, Madame Bovis in Nice, and Caressa and Francais in Paris. He was wounded during World War I. From 1922, he established himself independently in Grenoble, moving to Meylan in 1941. In later years, he was assisted by his son Jean Frédéric Schmitt (b. 1937). He created three models: two based on Amati and Guarneri, respectively, and a third that was entirely personal. These models were titled 'Modèle Normal', 'Modèle de Soloiste', and 'Mieulx ne Scay'. His workmanship was fine. He branded his instruments internally and in the pegbox: Lucien Schmitt / Luthier à Grenoble 19..
