Léon Bernardel
Bow maker / Violin maker
(1853 – 1931)
Léon Bernardel was the son and pupil of Ernest Auguste Bernardel. Before joining his family at Gand et Bernardel Freres, he worked with Derazey. In 1899, he opened his own shop at 40 Faubourg Poissonniere, collaborating with his son Léon (II). In 1914, he became a director of Couesnon and Co., musical exporters. He maintained the excellent family tradition in new work, following Lupot styles, primarily on Stradivari models with strong red-coloured varnish. Some instruments were made on his behalf in Mirecourt and sold in various grades of 'student' and 'artist' models. Fine bows were branded: 'LEON BERNARDEL'.
