Simpert Niggel III
Violin maker
(1710 – 1785)
Simpert Niggel was the son-in-law of Johann Ott and the most important maker of this family. He demonstrated fine craftsmanship on a model derived from Stainer. The volute was finely contrived with an extended last turn. The varnish had a good honey brown color but was disappointingly thin and brittle. Arching varied from high in the early period to a medium-full Amati type. His cellos were very fine and of good proportions.
