Aegidius Kloz
Violin maker
(1675 – c. 1727)
The lack of historical documentation surrounding the origins of Aegidius Kloz makes it unlikely that he is a descendant of Matthias I, founder of a major branch of the Mittenwald violin making family. His extant instruments date from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and are markedly superior to those of Matthias I's grandson Aegidius Sebastian Kloz, who was born in 1733. Not surprisingly, the two makers have been previously conflated despite the contrast in their work.
