François Fourrier (François II) Nicolas
Violin maker
(fl. 1758 – 1810)
François Fourrier (François II) Nicolas was the son and pupil of François Nicolas (I). He was employed by E. Saunier in Paris. He established himself independently there in 1784 and was appointed Luthier to the Royal School of Music in 1784 and to Emperor Napoleon I in 1789. His workshop was located at place de l'Ecole from 1789, then at rue Nicaise in 1797, and finally at rue des Petits Champs. The name Fourrier acknowledged St Pierre Fourrier of Mattaincourt, a well-known dedicatee in the Vosges region, where the Nicolas family originated. He generally worked to a large Stradivari model, featuring emphatic and slightly heavy workmanship with low ribs and thick, highly colored varnish, ranging from clear red to deep orange-brown. His cellos were particularly successful, showcasing very refined and superior work. The best instruments are sometimes found with false Lupot labels applied by unscrupulous dealers, and they are often branded: 'Nicolas de Paris. '.
