Born in Leeds, England in 1948, Roger Hargrave initially studied fine arts and taught painting, he then transitioned to instrument making in the 1970s, training at the Newark school before joining the prestigious workshop of W. E. Hill & Sons London as a restorer of fine Italian instruments.
In 1981, he moved to Bremen, Germany, to manage Geigenbau Machold's workshop, where he assembled one of the world's most distinguished teams of bowed stringed instrument restorers.
Since establishing his own business in 1986, Hargrave has become renowned for his detailed reproductions and modern instruments inspired by the classical Italian tradition, winning numerous awards including a gold medal at the International Triennale in Cremona, Italy.
