                                    (1664 – c. 1700)

Willem van der Sijde recorded as a sailor in Amsterdam in 1684. He was an active violin maker from 1689 and remained in Amsterdam until 1692, although Henley cites a label from The Hague dated 1691. His violins featured a very large Amati model with broad whalebone purfling and a flat arch, although a broad edge channel slightly restricted the design. The soundholes were widely disposed with emphatic nicks, set low on the body. The edges were deeply cut. He included a large volute on the head with deep fluting and an extended throat. The finish was quite coarse, and he used a fine golden-brown semi-transparent varnish. Labels cited by Henley suggested activity in The Hague and in Amsterdam after 1692, but these claims remain unconfirmed.
