Bartolomeo Cristofori
Violin maker
(c. 1655 – 1732)
An important figure in the history of musical instrument making representing a bridge between stringed and keyboard instruments. In 1688 he was appointed musical instrument maker to Grand Prince Ferdinando de' Medici in Florence and he was responsible for the inventory of the Prince's instrument collection drawn up in 1716. A handful of large-sized cellos are known and one double bass which is preserved in the Cherubini Museum in Florence. His work recalls that of Giovanni Battista Gabrielli, who may have been his pupil.
