Pasquale Ventapane
Violin maker
(c. 1840 – c. 1870)
Pasquale Ventapane was possibly the son or brother of Lorenzo Ventapane. He claimed to have been a pupil of Antonio Gagliano according to his labels. He established himself independently at 23 via Speranzella, Naples. His work was fairly coarse and generally considered inferior to that of Lorenzo, featuring extended soundholes that were sometimes positioned very close to the edges, and lower wings that were unfluted. The plates had flat narrow edges. He formed scrolls crudely, and the cellos, in particular, displayed very prominent eyes. The varnish he used had a texture similar to Lorenzo's, with hard pale brown or more frequently yellow shades. Ventapane Pasquale / Fabricante di violini e violoncelli / via Speranzella No. 23 Napoli.
