Gaspar Lorenzini
Violin maker
(c. 1723 – c. 1804)
Gaspar Lorenzini was probably a pupil of J. B. Guadagnini, and the Guadagnini and Lorenzini families were certainly acquainted. His early work featured slightly coarse materials and a thin golden ground, yet it exhibited good Italian quality. Later work was more finely finished, characterized by low but full arching and carefully attended details. The varnish was red-orange, slightly thin and brittle, but very fine. The purfling was often quite broad. He produced excellent small violas and sometimes branded them within a heart shape on the table beneath the fingerboard: `G. L. P. '.
