Joseph D. Deulin
Violin maker
(1888 – 1967)
Joseph D. Deulin moved from Madison to Washington D. C. in 1907, where he worked as a violinist and violin repairer. In 1912, he relocated to Toledo, Ohio, to work for Alton Saunders, before settling in Detroit, Michigan, in 1914 at the invitation of the conductor of the Palace Theatre Orchestra. He opened a shop at 11 Library Avenue, later relocating to Broadway Market, where he produced the majority of his large output of around 400 instruments. He was a highly respected maker and expert repairer, creating many violins modeled after the Guarneri del Gesù 'Kreisler' violin. Additionally, he made a significant number of student instruments labeled 'Golden Strad, ' using spruce that was specially imported from British Columbia for this purpose.
