Francesco Bertolotti 'da Salò'
Violin maker
(1565 – 1617)
Francesco Bertolotti, son and pupil of Gasparo da Salò, assisted his father for many years and inherited the family workshop after Gasparo's death in 1609. He was joined in 1598 by Gio. Paolo Maggini, who overshadowed him. After Gasparo's death, Bertolotti continued to work briefly with Maggini but soon lost interest in instrument making, devoting most of his time to managing the family estates for the remainder of his life. Very little work is attributed to him directly; one lira da gamba in the Cologne Musikhistorisches Museum bears a dated label of 1612, and a fine Brescian back attached to a composite viola carries what appears to be an authentic, albeit barely legible, label.
