Giuseppe Gagliano
Violin maker
(1742 – 1820)
Giuseppe Gagliano, son and pupil of Nicola Gagliano, was an effective and consistent maker during his career, which spanned from 1770 to 1800. While he initially attained a level of craftsmanship that rivaled his father's, his later partnership with his brother Antonio led to a general decline in quality. Works produced exclusively by Giuseppe are considered superior to those made jointly. His later instruments featured crudely cut scrolls with a very restricted throat, and some examples were decorated somewhat in Antonio.
