John N. Aschow
Violin maker
(c. 1885 – 1939)
John N. Aschow apprenticed in Denmark and later became a pupil at the Mittenwald School. He emigrated to the USA and worked for Kohler & Chase before opening a shop in Oakland, California, in 1906. His son, also named John, later assisted him and took over the business, which he maintained until 1969. He created instruments based on Stradivari, Guarneri, and personal models. His own varnish was made from copal and seed-lac, and he used local woods. Occasionally, he imported pre-carved necks. A total of 199 instruments were recorded, including violins, violas, and cellos. He also made bows. His brand was: J. N. ASCHOW 1928 No. 196 / J. N. Aschow / Oakland, Cal. U. S. A.
