William Ebsworth Hill began working in his father Henry Lockey's>/link_maker> (or, Lockey) shop around 1831 and was later apprenticed to Charles Harris after his father's death in 1835. Hill's success as a tradesman are evident in his relationship with the London bow maker James ...Read More Tubbs, who started to produce bows for Hill in the 1850s branded, 'W.E. Hill.'

After several relocations, Hill opened the firm on which his legacy rests in 1880. Known as 'W.E. Hill & Sons,' over the succeeding generations the firm set an extraordinary standard for repair and restoration work, as well as for fine bow making. Hill's violins themselves are rare and not especially noteworthy, but nonetheless upon his death in 1895 he left a thriving business behind to his conscientious and skilled sons. Read Less
