Oswald Weidlich
Violin maker
(1864 – 1907)
Oswald Weidlich studied under H. Gläsel. He later worked for L. Otto in Düsseldorf. In 1886, he established a business in Budapest with his brother Anton Ernst, who was a wind instrument maker. He subsequently worked alone on Soroksári Street, then at 9 Kecskeméti Street from 1892 to 1896, assisted by L. Bohák. A gold medal was awarded for a quartet in Paris in 1900. His fine work featured a Stradivari-derived model with a distinctive scroll, possibly inspired by the Guarneri del Gesù 1743 'Cannone' violin that belonged to Paganini. The varnish ranged from golden-yellow to dark brown. The interior work was neatly executed in willow, and the linings were fully morticed. He branded his instruments internally: 'Weidlich Budapest. '.
