Louis Guersan
Violin maker
(c. 1700 – 1770)
Louis Guersan was a pupil and successor of Claude Pierray, becoming a member of the corporation of luthiers in 1748 and making head in 1769. His workshop was located in the rue Fossé-St-Germain des Prés, where he was appointed as maker and repairer to the Dauphin and to the Opéra. Guersan's instruments typically featured small dimensions, a somewhat narrow body, and medium arching, all executed with fine craftsmanship. He was known for a distinctive head design, with the last turn of the volute extending into a comma-shaped eye, and fluting that extended beyond the throat outside the pegbox. He used high-quality materials and a pale golden-amber varnish. His recorded works include a variety of instruments such as quintons, pardessus de viols, violins, violas, and cellos.
