Jean Cornelius Vauchel
Violin maker
(1782 – 1856)
Jean Cornelius Vauchel was the son of French refugees in Offenbach. He worked for Tourte in Paris before moving back to Offenbach and establishing himself in Würzburg around 1809 as a luthier to the Grand Duke there. He was also appointed as a maker to the court of Tuscany. He worked in Damme and Mainz, ultimately retiring to Schweinheim in 1853, leaving his shop in the care of his assistant J. Reiter of Mittenwald. His early work featured high arches and was unremarkable, but his mature period showed greater influence from the classical Cremonese school and was more successful. His workmanship was fine and accurate, though the varnish was inconsistent; however, the best varnish was of very fine quality. He received enthusiastic support from Paganini, Spohr, and other virtuosi of the period.
