Andras (Andreas) Thir I
(1765 – 1798)
Andras (Andreas) Thir was the son of Antal Thir. He was probably a student of Janos Gyorgy Thir (II). His instruments featured a 'Leeb/Amati model' with corners that were more substantial than those of earlier makers in the family. He was a very significant maker of the 'Pressburg School' (Bratislava, known as Pressburg until 1919). The scroll was finely worked, and the soundholes were well cut and described. He applied a substantial and well-textured brown varnish.
