Charles Jean-Baptiste Collin-Mézin, originally from Mirecourt, was the son of Claude Nicolas Collin and studied under N. F. Vuillaume in Brussels. He established his workshop at 8-14 rue de Faubourg Poissoniere, Paris in 1867, later moving to no. 10 and then to no. 29. A leading French maker of the 19th century, he utilized Stradivari, Guarneri, and Amati models and was known for his hard spirit varnish, typically golden or light red-brown. Collin-Mézin received awards at Paris exhibitions in 1878, 1879, 1889, and 1900, and was honored as 'Officier d'Academie des Beaux-Arts' in 1884. His instruments, often stamped internally with 'Collin-Mezin,' were played by notable musicians, including Joseph Joachim. He also trained his son, Charles Collin-Mezin fils, and produced bows.
