André Chardon
Bow maker
(1897 – 1963)
André Chardon was the son and pupil of Marie Joseph Chardon. He became active in 1911 but was called for military service in 1915. He returned to Paris in 1919 and continued with bow making as well as violin repair and adjustment. From around 1930, he adopted the underslide developed by W. E. Hill & Sons in London and evolved his own style influenced by Tourte and Peccatte, while establishing himself independently at 39 rue de Rome. He benefitted from a large stock of aged pernambuco that had been acquired by his father and grandfather. In 1949, he succeeded to the family business in partnership with his sister Joséphine. His output was small, but the bows were of fine quality. They were branded: `CHANOT et CHARDON. PARIS', and 'CHARDON à PARIS' in the usual place on the handle, as well as `C. C. C. ' on the handle above the frog.
