Jacques-Pierre Thibout
Violin maker
(1779 – 1856)
Jacques-Pierre Thibout worked for Koliker in Paris starting in 1796. He established himself independently at 24 rue Montmartre in 1807. In 1810, he moved to rue Rameau, where he operated under the sign 'Au Roi David'. He was appointed luthier to the Opera, conservatoire, and royal court. He received medals at the Paris expositions in 1827, 1844, and 1855. His son Gabriel Eugene Thibout assisted him. His instruments featured Stradivari models in the Lupot style, though they were inconsistent. He constantly experimented with model and varnish, but the finest examples were of very high quality and often bore false Lupot labels. He used first-class materials.
