Giulio Cesare Gigli
Violin maker
(c. 1724 – 1794)
One of the best of his generation of the Roman school, Giulio Cesare Gigli was born around 1724 and in 1738 went to live and apprentice with his uncle Michele Platner. After Platner's death in 1752, Gigli inherited his workshop, materials, and tools, and worked until his death in 1794. Despite his relatively long career, instruments by this maker are rare. His violins are rather large and somewhat heavy and square, while his cellos are of typically Roman style and highly valued. The varnish is often clear or yellowish orange.
