Giovanni Guidanti
Violin maker
(1687 – 1760)
Though the familial relationship between them is unclear, historical documentation shows that Giovanni Guidanti inherited Floriano Guidanti's position as repairer of the Bologna Accademia Filarmonica's instruments shortly after his death in 1715. There is some evidence that Giovanni was well regarded as a maker, yet there is little extant information about his working life. In fact, recent research suggests that the Guidanti family was perhaps larger than originally thought, and prompts us to rethink the authorship of instruments bearing the original label "Joannes Florenus Guidantus." These instruments possess stylistic characteristics that place them after the time of Tononi, and are likely the work of Giovanni Guidanti, but more research should be done on this important family of makers before definitive attributions can be established.
