Frank J. Callier
Bow maker
(1883 – 1971)
Frank J. Callier was a violin and bow maker of French descent. He worked in St. Louis from 1900 to 1914, in San Antonio (Texas) from 1916 to 1926, and ultimately settled in Hollywood in 1928. His son Paul continued the business after his death, and Craig Scollard took over in 1984. He made approximately 300 violins, three violas, and three cellos, and he focused on bow making after 1918. His bows were well designed and executed in a personal style, while also replicating classical French models. The sticks were rubbed with oil and then coated with spirit varnish. He completed around 1, 500 bows. He received medals in Chicago in 1925 and Philadelphia in 1926 for his very fine work. Instruments were branded internally as 'FJC, ' while bows were branded 'FRANK J CALLIER. '.
