Francesco Goffriller
Violin maker
(1691 – 1742)
Francesco Goffriller, son of Matteo Goffriller, left his father's workshop in Venice in 1714 to work in Udine. He seems to have predeceased Matteo and produced instruments characterized by a coarser finish and slightly less discipline than those of his father, yet they possessed great character, enhanced by the beautiful dark red varnish and golden ground typical of Venice. His distinctive scrolls were slender, weak, and upright, featuring a small eye and narrow chamfer. The instruments varied in design, including a fine low-arched Stradivari type with wide-set soundholes and a more Amatise model with a higher, slightly pinched arch. The corners were broad and square, and the purfling was somewhat clumsy. Instruments of the former type were sometimes relabeled as Bergonzi, and original labels were rare
