Claude Victor Rambaux
Violin maker
(1806 – 1871)
Claude Victor Rambaux apprenticed to Moitessier in Mirecourt from 1820 to 1824. He worked with Thibout in Caen starting in 1824 and with Francois Gand in Paris from 1827. He established himself independently in 1838 in the Faubourg Poissonniere. In 1857, he retired to Mirecourt. An experimental maker, he made many efforts in wood treatment and bass bar development. His work followed the Stradivari model and exhibited good workmanship. He used thick and somewhat cloudy varnish. He was responsible for reducing several old large-model cellos for modern use, including early large model Stradivari cellos. Claude Victor Rambaux received a brevet in Paris in 1846. C. V. R.
