Alexander Murdoch
(1815 – 1891)
Alexander Murdoch established himself in Aberdeen by 1865, at 9 Minster Lane until around 1900. He later formed a partnership with Alexander Dingwall, creating Murdoch and Dingwall at the Market Gallery in Aberdeen. Dingwall subsequently worked in Glasgow. He was possibly a pupil of Thomas Jamieson, although he was typically described as self-taught. He authored The Fiddle in Scotland (Ascherberg, London, 1888). His style was idiosyncratic, yet his instruments were often well-made and accurately finished, despite inconsistencies. Many of his lower-grade instruments were made without purfling, using poor materials and a pallid grey varnish. Some were branded beneath the button: `Murdoch, Aberdeen'. They were signed internally.
