Giuseppe Scarampella
Violin maker
(1838 – 1902)
Giuseppe Scarampella was the son of Paolo Scarampella and a pupil of Nicola Bianchi in Paris. In 1866, he worked for Luigi Castellini in Florence, later succeeding him as the curator of the Cherubini Museum. He was a highly regarded maker of instruments modeled after Stradivari and Guarneri, featuring a distinctly personal interpretation. His instruments tended to be overall heavy, with the arching sometimes appearing a bit over-full and little relief at the edges. The scroll was rather flat carved and somewhat bulky, yet it complemented the overall style of the instruments. He used fine dark red or golden varnish and good materials, often utilizing local maple. His work was commonly reproduced and sold fraudulently. His branding included "Giuseppe Scarampella" internally and "Firenze" externally below the back button.
