Robert Ballantyne
(1796 – c. 1870)
Robert Ballantyne worked in Edinburgh from 1827, sharing the same address as John Blair at 8 Potterrow. The two men evidently had some association, and there were obvious similarities in their work. From 1831 to 1834, he was located at 1 West College St., then moved to 35 High St., near Thomas Hardie. In 1841, he relocated to Glasgow, where he remained until his death. His work was rare but full of character, featuring a slightly squared outline that was well-regulated. He produced fine Stradivarian soundholes, which were set upright and a little close together. The varnish was of good quality, clear red-orange, and well applied. Some instruments were eccentric, including at least one without corners and with flame-shaped soundholes. He branded his work beneath the button: `R. Ballantyne Edin'.
