John Wesley Hinchcliffe was a pupil of J. B. Squier in Boston. He established himself independently in Ottawa from 1888. A prolific maker, he was credited with 530 violins, 50 violas, 80 cellos, 12 double basses, and 150 guitars and mandolines. The best grade 'Artist' violins were made on models of the Stradivari 'Alard' violin, Guarnerius, Nicol?, Amati, and Vuillaume. He developed and retailed his own oil varnish.
